Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means keeping betting as a paid-for leisure activity that you control, rather than something that controls your time, money or mood. This page explains the tools that exist, what changes when a bookmaker is not part of GAMSTOP, and how to spot trouble early. You must be 18 or over to gamble. Fact-check date: 1 October 2026.
Disclosure: Betting Not On Gamstop may earn commission if you use some of the bookmakers we list elsewhere on the site. Commission does not buy ranking position, and nothing on this page is an invitation to bet.
The short answer: what protects you, and what does not
In Great Britain, licensed operators must follow Gambling Commission rules, including GAMSTOP registration, affordability checks and tools for limits and self-exclusion. Many sites described as "not on GamStop" operate under overseas gambling licences instead. Accepting British customers is not the same as being authorised by the UK Gambling Commission to serve them, so the safeguards you rely on at a GB-licensed bookmaker may be weaker or missing.
If you have self-excluded through GAMSTOP, the exclusion exists to protect you. Using a site outside the scheme to get around it undermines that protection. If you are unsure whether you should be betting at all, stop and speak to a support service first (details below).
Understanding GAMSTOP and its exclusion periods
GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion service for online gambling in Great Britain. Once you register, every UK Gambling Commission-licensed online operator must block your account and stop marketing to you. Exclusion periods are six months, one year or five years, and they cannot be shortened once they begin. When the period ends, you must take action to rejoin gambling; it does not restart on its own.
GAMSTOP covers licensed sites only. It cannot stop an offshore bookmaker accepting you, which is why additional tools matter if you choose to bet outside it.
Practical tools you can set up today
- Deposit limits. Set a daily, weekly or monthly cap on what you can add to your account. Decide the figure from spare income, such as £20 a week, not from what you hope to win.
- Loss limits. Where a site offers them, these cap net losses over a period, which is often more useful than a deposit cap.
- Time-outs and reality checks. Short breaks, from 24 hours upwards, and session reminders help break long in-play sessions.
- Self-exclusion with the bookmaker. Most sites let you close your account for a set period. Ask support to confirm in writing.
- Gambling blocking software. Tools such as Gamban, BetBlocker and Net Nanny-style filters block gambling sites and apps on your devices, including offshore ones.
- Bank-level blocks. Many UK banks let you block gambling transactions on debit cards. Check your banking app.
Why offshore betting sites need extra care
Where a site is licensed overseas, limits, self-exclusion and complaints routes depend on that licensing body and the operator's own terms. Before you register anywhere, check:
- Which licence the site states, and whether you can verify it on the regulator's own register.
- Whether deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion are available and easy to find.
- How complaints are handled and whether any independent dispute body exists.
- Whether the account is held in GBP. If not, currency conversion fees and exchange rates can quietly raise your costs.
- Withdrawal limits, processing times and verification (KYC) requirements, including source-of-funds checks.
No betting site is completely safe, and no operator can guarantee withdrawals or winnings. Treat any claim otherwise as a warning sign.
How bonuses can push you to bet more than planned
Sports betting bonuses, welcome bonuses, deposit bonuses and free bets can look generous, but the conditions often encourage extra staking. Watch for:
- Wagering requirements: a bonus with 10x wagering means betting ten times the bonus amount before withdrawing related funds. A £50 bonus would need £500 staked.
- Minimum qualifying odds: for example, only bets at 2/1 or longer may count.
- Expiry dates, maximum bonus bets and cashout limits that can shorten your window or cap what you can take out.
- Contribution rules: some sports or payment methods may count less, or not at all.
Headline offers on the bookmakers we list are advertising. Several are quoted in euros or dollars, which means they may not be GBP amounts. Read the full terms yourself before depositing, and remember that skipping a bonus is always an option. Our terms and conditions explain how this site works.
Signs betting is becoming a problem
- Betting more than you planned, or chasing losses with bigger stakes.
- Using money meant for rent, bills or food.
- Borrowing, or hiding your betting from people close to you.
- Feeling irritable when you cannot bet, or thinking about it constantly.
- Reopening accounts or moving to new sites after setting limits or excluding.
Gambling is not a way to earn income or solve money worries. If debts are building, free debt advice services can help, and betting more will not fix the position.

Which bookmakers on this site, and what to check on each
The operators we list are ranked by editorial rating, not by how safe or responsible they are. We have not tested any of them, and we have not verified every safer-gambling tool each one provides. Here is what to check on the top three before registering.
Tenobet
Ranked first with an editorial rating of 10.0 and a sports package advertised as 300% up to €3,000. The amount is in euros, so confirm GBP account availability and conversion costs. Limitation: a large percentage bonus usually carries heavy wagering, which can encourage higher staking. Find out the limit tools and licence details in the terms before you deposit.
Trixino
Rated 9.9, advertising 325% up to €1,500. As with Tenobet, the offer is euro-denominated. Limitation: a high match percentage makes the conditions the key point, so check wagering, expiry and cashout caps first. Look for the self-exclusion process before you create an account.
Betninja
Rated 9.9, with an advertised €1,000 plus 100 free spins. The free spins relate to casino-style play, so be aware of a shared wallet that mixes sports and casino balances. Limitation: a shared wallet makes it harder to track what you actually spend on betting. Check whether limits apply across both products.
Other listed options include CoinPoker, smash, BetBluff, Emberbet, Rolletto, 7abet and Spartaza. BetBluff, for instance, advertises 100% up to £150, a smaller sterling-denominated figure that is easier to budget around, though its conditions still need reading. For casino-focused readers, see our non GamStop casinos guide.
A simple pre-bet checklist
- Decide your budget before logging in, and set a deposit limit first.
- Do not bet when tired, upset or after drinking.
- Ignore bonus pressure and read every condition.
- Keep a record of deposits and withdrawals.
- Stop at your limit, whether you are up or down.
